Goodreads Synopsis:

Sara Jane Rispoli is still searching for her missing family, but instead of fighting off a turncoat uncle and crooked cops, this time she finds herself on the run from creepy beings with red, pulsing eyes and pale white skin chasing her through the streets in ice cream trucks; they can only be described as Ice Cream Creatures. They're terrifying and hell bent on killing her, but they're also a link to her family, a clue to where they might be and who has them. While she battles these new pursuers, she's also discovering more about her own cold fury and more about the Chicago Outfit, how the past misdeeds--old murders and vendettas--might just be connected to her present and the disappearance of her family. But connecting the dots is tough and time-consuming and may finally be the undoing of her relationship with the handsome Max--who's now her boyfriend. But for his own safety, Sara Jane may have to end this relationship before it even really starts. Her pursuers who've shown her her mother's amputated finger and the head of the Chicago Outfit who's just whistled her in for a sit-down make a romance unthinkable. The only thing that matters is finding her family and keeping everyone she loves alive.

My Review:

I was shocked by how much I enjoyed reading Flicker & Burn. This is definitely one of those rare cases where the sequel surpasses it's predecessor. The first installment of the Cold Fury series was a good read, great even. I found myself enamored with the elaborate world T.M. constructed, as well as the supernatural twist he intertwined with the plot to give it that dramatic flair. This was one of the reasons I found the plot, the whole premise really, to be so intriguing. It isn't your average, everyday blood-sucking vampire or werewolf love story, but a contemporary action thriller with just a hint of something that's not completely human.

I was seriously blown away by it all, more so after I had enough time to digest the book and admire the lengths the author took to make it come to life. And that's exactly what it felt like. As if people who were born with ghiasso furioso (totally just butchered the spelling of that), could actually exist in the world today. The author made it feel realistic by taking actual history and sculpting it to meet his needs, much like what Rick Riordan did with the Percy Jackson series. If you've read the Percy Jackson series, then you probably know what I'm talking about, but for those who haven't, an example would be making the Civil War a battle between clashing demigods, instead of a war between the North and South soldiers in the United States.

In this installment, Sara Jane, SJ for short, has a bleaker outlook on life. After everything she's been faced with, encountering situation after situation that requires fighting or unleashing her secret power just for the sake of survival, she has been forced to grow up faster than any teen ever should. In Cold Fury, we discover that Sara has the ability to wield ghiasso furioso, a cold blue flame of fury that rises whenever she's in emotional turmoil or severe distress, a flame that once unleashed, shows her adversary their deepest, darkest fear. However, as the series progresses, her abilities end up evolving as well, growing in strength and size with continual use.

The more she uses her power for mafia-related business and the more she kills, the more she finds her aversion to death becoming weaker and weaker. Yet, despite it all, she still continues to fight against the monster within her and keep her humanity from withering away. However, although I admired her strength, cunning, and intelligence, there were still a few times when I questioned her actions. She seemed almost indifferent to letting a certain someone destroy themself little by little in order to gain the information she needed to discover her family's location. I wish she would've at least tried to find another way that didn't involve hurting said person in the progress.

In this book, were introduced to a couple of new characters. Since I really don't want to give anything away, I'm going to try my best not to mention who they are to Sara in particular. Heather was a suckerpunch that I truly never saw coming. My emotions were a complete wreck because of her. One minute, I loved her and wanted to be her best friend....and the next, it was all I could do to refrain from punching my pillow in aggravation. Back and forth, Back and forth. In the end, I've finally concluded that although Heather did have her bitchy moments, I still loved her as a supporting character nonetheless.

If you've read my review for Cold Fury, you would already know that I absolutely despised the romance in the last novel and found it completely unnecessary. Not all books need a romance to appeal to the YA audience. I would read this series for the action and suspense alone! I didn't like the relationship between Max and Sara any more than I did in Cold Fury. Max was boring and completely detached from the plot. I really don't see why Sara is drawn to him and thinks he's boyfriend material. Why can we never have a book where the heroine is able to stand strong on her own?

The action was fast paced the majority of the time, and I didn't have nearly as much trouble getting into the book as I did with the first one. The fighting scenes made me feel like I was actually in the book itself, experiencing what the characters felt as the scene unfolded. You could obviously see that the author spent a good chunk of time researching boxing and fighting techniques in order to make his story sound more believable.

However, there were a couple of places where the story dragged on a bit, like the times when T.M. just seemed to be dumping loads and loads of information on us instead of subtly working it into the plot. I don't know about you, but I certainly don't enjoy reading books that take on the tone of a textbook, or my ninth grade research paper for that matter. Once again, I had issues with the movie references. There weren't as many this time around, but every time I did see one, I felt my eyes glaze over, because I had no freaking idea what they were talking about when they compared movie situations to the situation they were currently in.

Overall, I enjoyed Flicker & Burn immensely, considering the fact that I was a bit put off when the synopsis promised creatures with red pulsing eyes who drove around in ice cream trucks. The plot and the characters were intriguing and realistic, albeit a bit corny at times. If you've already read, and enjoyed, Cold Fury, then you certainly won't be disappointed by its sequel.

Heroine- 4.5/5
Romance- 2/5 Unnecessary nuisance.
Action- 4.5/5

Goodreads Synopsis:

Jason Bourne meets The Sopranos in this breathtaking adventure

Sara Jane Rispoli is a normal sixteen-year-old coping with school and a budding romance--until her parents and brother are kidnapped and she discovers her family is deeply embedded in the Chicago Outfit (aka the mob).

Now on the run from a masked assassin, rogue cops and her turncoat uncle, Sara Jane is chased and attacked at every turn, fighting back with cold fury as she searches for her family. It's a quest that takes her through concealed doors and forgotten speakeasies--a city hiding in plain sight. Though armed with a .45 and 96K in cash, an old tattered notebook might be her best defense--hidden in its pages the secret to "ultimate power." It's why she's being pursued, why her family was taken, and could be the key to saving all of their lives.

Action packed, with fresh, cinematic writing, Cold Fury is a riveting and imaginative adventure readers will devour.

My Review:

I didn't see that coming.....at all! At first, I was a bit skeptical as to if I would enjoy this novel, because as all of my regular readers know, contemporary books aren't my cup of tea. Although I admit, I probably shouldn't be too quick to judge considering the fact that I can count all the contemporary books I've read on one hand alone. With that being said, if you know any really good, fast paced contemporary reads, feel free to recommend them to me! I'm definitely open to new suggestions, because I'm trying to get over my silly prejudices and take a step outside my comfort zone. Anyways, I digress. Cold Fury was a package of pure epicness confined within the boundaries of ink on a page. Although I did have a hard time getting sucked into the novel and reaching my equilibrium, it was nothing but fast paced action and nail-biting suspense once I did.

Sixteen-year old Sara Jane Rispoli was an admirable protagonist who wasn't afraid to kick ass when necessary or stand up for others who had the misfortune of being bullied just for being different. Her Italian heritage and background intrigued me, and I enjoyed spending my time learning about her culture and reading the Italian phrases thrown in now and then. Of course, since I'm not fluent in Italian, I can't tell you if the phrases were used correctly or not, but I did understand the gist of it, which was all that mattered to me. xD I was also pretty shocked to learn after reading the book that this completely believable, albeit slightly boyish, protagonist was written by a male author. It's a hit and miss in these situations, but T.M. successfully accomplished what he was going for. An independent, courageous, female lead who is as tough as nails, yet still has a sensitive girlish side that has her insecure moments when it comes to talking to guys, something all of us girls can relate to.

I really could've done without the romance. The majority of YA books are enhanced once the romance is intertwined with the plot, but there are a few exceptions that don't need relationships to stand independently on their own. Since that's coming from an action junkie's perspective, I guess that statement wouldn't hold true for those who favor romance over action. The relationship between Sara and Max was just...weird. It wasn't love at first sight......but love at second sight, which doesn't make it much better in my eyes. It seemed as if they jumped right into a relationship with each other like they already had one to begin with. Sorry, but just because you exchanged a few encouraging words at a party a couple years ago doesn't make you soul mates. The other problem I had was the love interest himself. Sure...he was nice, but that's all I really got from him. I never felt any sparks between them, just a constant annoyance that there had to be a romance added in the first place.

The pacing was erratic. In the beginning few chapters, I was interested in learning how Sara's family worked, judging her character based on her everyday, mundane decisions, listening to the cute little conversations between her and her younger brother, Lou, who I wholly adored. But then....the flashbacks from present to past began to grate on my nerves, and I soon found myself wishing that the author would just stick to one period of time, instead of hopping back and forth between the two. It became confusing, and I had trouble discerning what was happening, what had already happened, and what was to come.

However, once I got used to T.M.'s slightly eccentric writing style, I slowly started becoming more and more immersed in the danger filled world T.M. created. Once I reached the half point mark, I was completely hooked! Another point I wanted to make, there were tons of movie references in this novel, movies that I had never heard of before and therefore couldn't relate to. If your a fan of classic or older movies filmed in the 1900s, you'll probably connect more with this book than I did, but to me, it was boring, and I just ended up skipping them altogether.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It took a while to get into, but once I did, it was nothing but smooth sailing from there! The romance didn't feel realistic enough and progressed way too quickly for my tastes, but it wasn't gag or bang-my-head-on-a-table worthy. Even if your not a huge contemporary fan, like me xD, I would still recommend this novel to you, because it does have a sort of paranormal twist to it. Nothing to the extent of vampires or werewolves, something a little more subtle, but no less extraordinary.

Heroine- 4.5/5
Action- 3.5/5 Pace increased once
I hit the half point mark.
Romance- 2/5
Totally unnecessary.
Writing- 3/5
Some of the explanations were difficult to understand. Present to past changes annoyed me.
Overall- 4/5

My Review:

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer left me breathless. The sequel rendered me speechless.

It's been days since I've read The Evolution of Mara Dyer, but even now, every single time my mind wanders in that direction, I have this almost irresistible urge to jump up and down and start hyperventilating like a little kid in a candy store. There are so many great and downright creepy things in this novel! I'm so relieved that I decided to read this in broad daylight, because if I hadn't, I would have definitely flinched at every single rustle of sound thinking that somewhere, out there, Jude was watching me.This is the type of novel to make you want to turn every single light in your house on. To check behind your shower curtain and under your bed just to make sure that there aren't any murderers lurking in the shadows. If you scare easily and still wish to read The Evolution of Mara Dyer, despite all my warnings, I urge you to proceed with caution.

I absolutely adored the protagonist, Mara. If I had the misfortune to be caught in her position, I would've cracked and gone 100% insane eons ago. I'm usually really good at distinguishing between the truth and the red herrings as well as figuring out answers way before the characters themselves do. But with Mara? It was just a huge jumble of puzzle pieces that I couldn't fit together no matter how hard I struggled to. Because, let's face it, she's not exactly what you would call the most reliable character.

At times you might think that she's just a misunderstood girl who wields a deathly power that no one understands. Not even herself. But other times......Michelle makes you wonder. Is she really insane? Are her hallucinations based on things that have actually occurred in the past or are going to occur in the future? Or are they the product of PSTD and a heightened sense of paranoia?  Her parents didn't make things any better either. Even though I knew that all they wanted was for their daughter to get better again, they could've at least taken the time to hear her out instead of nodding condescendingly every time she uttered a word.

Noah Shaw. I haven't been this swoony over a male character since Daemon Black from The Lux Series and Kaidan whatever his last name is from the Sweet Evil Trilogy. That's definitely saying something because Daemon's and Kaidan's sexiness can not even be comprehended or described from words of the English language. Why oh why can't boys like this exist in real life? British accent, dangerous, dark, mysterious, compassionate, and witty. What more could a girl ever want? The conversations between Mara and Noah always had me laughing out loud and clutching my stomach from not being able to catch my breath! Knowing my luck, those out loud moments always occurred during very inappropriate moments.

The relationships in this novel were beautifully written and perfectly executed. Not very often do we see such a strong bond between brother and sister. That one time when Daniel had to share his secret thoughts about Mara during an activity in the insane institution/Rehab Center was just So. Freaking. Beautiful. I was reduced to a sobbing, blubbering mess of tears. And Noah? The romance between them wasn't perfect. No romance ever is, which is why I loved this novel so much. We don't see the same, "He fell in love with her. She fell in love with him. He left because of some paranormal reason to protect the one he loved" sort of crap. Even though they did have fallouts and kept secrets from each other once in a while, they stuck together during the good and the bad times.

Loved the pacing of this novel! There was always so much stuff happening and your just continually bombarded left and right with questions! We get a little more background information on both of our main characters, but those answers just lead to more and more questions. I could barely make any guesses on where the novel was going next. Every plot twist, with the exception of one or two, took me by surprise. I was absolutely flabbergasted. And the end? I'm sure that everybody finds that to be such a big cliffhanger, but it can't be true. It's impossible. Michelle wouldn't do that to us. Right? .....o.o

Overall, please do yourself a favor and pick this book up as soon as you can. I might even get my mom to drive me to Barnes and Noble right now just to get a copy for the purpose of staring at it all day and thinking of the beautiful, masterpiece that is known as Noah Shaw. *Happy Sighs* A great read for everyone......except the fainthearted and easily spooked that is....*Evil grins*

Goodreads Synopsis:

THE FALSE PRINCE is the thrilling first book in a brand-new trilogy filled with danger and deceit and hidden identities that will have readers rushing breathlessly to the end.

In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king's long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well.

As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner's sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together.

An extraordinary adventure filled with danger and action, lies and deadly truths that will have readers clinging to the edge of their seats.

My Review:

Woo! I finished reading the False Prince a whole week ago, and I'm STILL fangirling over it's epicness. I can't even begin explaining to you, in coherent words, how much I have idolized this book. Whether I'm waking up in the morning, brushing my teeth, or doing math equations in school, I always find myself drifting off and pondering how much I LOVED this novel. While I was rambling to myself, trying to find a reason not to adore this book, which I didn't, I actually walked into a wall. I kid you not! My mental stability is on the verge of completely abandoning me.

My first impressions of The False Prince? I glanced at it in Barnes and Noble, but my reaction pretty much equated to mehh, and I walked off to find something better to read. Weeks later, it was in almost all of my recommendation tabs for each of my favorite books. Whatever I did, The False Prince just wouldn't leave me alone! So finally, I relented and decided to request it at the library.

Even with the novel in my hand, I wasn't too excited to read it. You see, I'm not a huge fan of male protagonists, because I don't feel as connected to them as I do to female protagonists. Because let's face it. Boys have a COMPLETELY different mindset then girls do. However, as soon as I cracked this novel open, I knew it was a keeper, because I was immediately entranced by the mindblowing world Jennifer created. Huh that's weird....the majority of my favorite novels are written by authors who's first names are Jennifer. I'm beginning to see a trend....

The protagonist, Sage, is so freaking amazing! So amazing that he's equally amazing and might even surpass Percy Jackson on my scale of amazingness! Wow, I need to widen my vocabulary. Anyways, in this story four orphans are selected for the chance at a life of lavishness and comfort. What's the catch? The only away they can achieve that life, is to impersonate the long lost prince of Carthya, Jaron. Each orphan embodies a single trait, like strength and intelligence. Sage, the boy who stole my heart, expresses cunningness and the ability to worm his way out of tough situations. He was strong, brave, perceptive, and above all, compassionate towards people, even those who have crossed him countless times. When I picture Sage, I see an eighteen year old guy, while in reality he's only fourteen going on fifteen. Which is so hard to believe, because his way of speaking and some of his more distinct mannerisms remind me that of an adult! As most guy characters are, he has a tendency to be slightly arrogant, but I loved him too much to care!

The other characters in the novel, mostly the other prince impersonators, had my head reeling! One second they were the good guys and then they were the bad guys. I couldn't predict anything, because their actions constantly changed for the better or for the worse. Throughout the whole novel, I found myself talking to who knows what, saying things like, "Trust him Trust him!" and then "Ohh wait...I take that back trust the other guy!" a little while later "Crap..never mind I'm going with my first instinct, and around and around it goes. The False Prince was completely unpredictable, and that's one of the biggest reasons why I loved it! I actually guessed what was going to happen at the end correctly, prior to reading the book. However, as I was reading the novel, I forgot all about my hypothesis and ended up being flabbergasted by the change in events! Now that my friends, is a telltale sign, of an majorly skilled and talented author.

The action was super well paced. Once I started this novel, I couldn't put it down even if my life was depending on it. I was hanging breathlessly to every single word that was being said and each twist and turn that occurred. There was NEVER a single moment, where I got bored or found a spot to stop and call it a night. And once again I became a walking corpse in school, because I read until three A.M. xD

For those of you who only read novels for the romance....you might not have the same views on The False Prince as I did. There was little, if any, romance in this book. Which I'm totally fine with, because I only read books for the action!

Overall, The False Prince has probably made it to my top five favorite books of all time. Which is a huge deal, because I have read a countless number of books in my lifetime. It was chock full of action and had me gasping at every twist and turn on the road. And that ending!? Held me absolutely flabbergasted even when I should've saw it coming. I would recommend this novel to both boys and girls of all ages, and especially to fans of the renowned Percy Jackson series. However, one thing that you should definitely do is set aside enough time to finish this novel in one sitting, because The False Prince will capture your attention and leave you breathlessly flipping pages, begging for more!

Amazon Summary:

Shhhh!
Don't spread the word! Three-day weekend. House party.
White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do not want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—three days on Henry Island at an exclusive house party. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their own reasons for wanting to be there, which involve their school's most eligible bachelor, T. J. Fletcher, and look forward to three glorious days of boys, bonding, and fun-filled luxury.
But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.
Suddenly, people are dying, and with a storm raging outside, the teens are cut off from the rest of the world. No electricity, no phones, no Internet, and a ferry that isn't scheduled to return for three days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

My Review:

Ten......was just not my cup of tea. Since And Then There Were None was one of the only novels I enjoyed reading for school, I thought I would love this even more, since I would be able to connect better with teens rather then adults. Sadly, I was mistaken. Maybe if I didn't read And Then There Were None first, I might have enjoyed Ten more but I could just never get engrossed with the action. Even when people were dying, I was just skimming over the words. I couldn't relate to any of the characters either, the only character I even remotely liked was T.J.

However I did not see that ending coming! I tried to analyze and dissect every character to find out who the murderer was and I still didn't get it right! I have no doubt that there will be tons of people who will love this thriller, I just wasn't one of them.

Heroine- 2/5
Romance- 3/5
Action- 3/5 There was alot of action but I just couldn't get into it.
Comedy- 2/5
Overall 2.5/5
